I have carried a camera on every trip I have taken since I was seventeen, and the question I am asked most often by people planning their first serious travel photography is: which camera should I buy? The honest answer is that it depends entirely on how you travel, what you want to photograph, and how much weight you are willing to carry. Here is how I think about it.
The Best Camera Is the One You Actually Carry
This is a cliche in photography circles and it is completely true. The most technically capable camera in the world is useless if it stays in your bag because it is too heavy to carry everywhere. A smaller, lighter camera that you have with you at all times will produce better travel photographs than a professional system you leave at the hotel. This is the most important principle in travel photography gear selection, and everything else flows from it.
For Beginners: Sony ZV-E10 or Fujifilm X-T30 II
Both of these are APS-C sensor mirrorless cameras — smaller and lighter than full-frame systems, with image quality that exceeds what most people will ever need for travel photography. The Sony ZV-E10 is the better video camera and is excellent for anyone who wants to create travel content for YouTube or social media. The Fujifilm X-T30 II produces stunning JPEG images straight from camera with Fuji’s famous film simulations — if you want beautiful photos without extensive post-processing, the Fuji is extraordinary.
Both cost between -900 body-only and use interchangeable lenses, which means you can expand the system over time. A single versatile zoom lens (the Fujifilm 18-55mm f/2.8-4 or Sony 16-50mm kit lens) covers most travel photography needs in one package.
For Serious Photographers: Sony A7C or Fujifilm X-T5
If image quality is your priority and you are willing to carry slightly more weight, full-frame mirrorless cameras like the Sony A7C deliver significantly better performance in low light and greater dynamic range. The A7C is remarkably compact for a full-frame camera and pairs beautifully with the Sony 28-60mm kit lens for a travel-friendly package.
The Fujifilm X-T5 is the best APS-C camera I have used for still photography — 40 megapixels in a compact body, with superb image quality and Fuji’s exceptional colour science. If you primarily shoot stills rather than video, it is an outstanding travel companion.
For Simplicity: A High-End Compact
If carrying a system camera with interchangeable lenses feels like too much commitment, the Sony RX100 VII and the Ricoh GR IIIx are the two best compact cameras currently available. The RX100 VII has a versatile zoom and excellent video capability in a jacket-pocket size. The Ricoh GR IIIx has a fixed 40mm lens, APS-C sensor and image quality that rivals cameras costing three times as much — it is a photographer’s camera in a tiny body and produces remarkable results in the right hands.
For Action and Adventure: GoPro Hero 12
For diving, snorkelling, hiking in rain, or any activity where you want to document without worrying about damaging an expensive camera, a GoPro is the answer. The Hero 12 is waterproof to 10 metres without a housing, shoots 5.3K video, stabilises footage remarkably well, and costs around . I used a GoPro extensively on my Koh Tao diving trip and the underwater footage was extraordinary.
Lenses Worth Considering
- A versatile zoom (24-70mm equivalent) — covers most travel photography situations in one lens
- A fast 35mm or 50mm prime — for low-light photography and a more intimate shooting style
- A wide-angle lens — for landscapes, interiors and architecture
For most travel photography, one good zoom lens is sufficient. The temptation to bring multiple lenses is real; the reality is that you will probably use the zoom 90% of the time.
