How to Book Cheap Flights: Everything I Have Learned From 400 Bookings

Airplane flying over clouds at sunset

I have booked somewhere in the region of four hundred flights over the past fifteen years, which means I have made most of the expensive mistakes already so you do not have to. The difference between paying full price and paying a fraction of it for the same seat on the same aircraft comes down to a handful of habits that, once learned, become completely automatic.

Book at the Right Time — Not Too Early, Not Too Late

The sweet spot for booking domestic flights is generally one to three months in advance. For international long-haul flights, two to five months out tends to deliver the best prices. Book too early and you are paying the initial high price before the airline has discounted unsold seats; book too late and those discounted seats are gone.

The old advice about booking on Tuesday afternoons is largely a myth — the research on this has become increasingly inconclusive. What is consistently true is that flying midweek (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) is almost always cheaper than flying Friday or Sunday, and early morning or late night flights are cheaper than the convenient mid-morning and early afternoon slots that everyone wants.

Use the Right Search Tools — and Use Them Cleverly

Person using laptop to search for flights and travel deals

Google Flights is my starting point for almost every search. The interface is clean, the price calendar view (which shows you the cheapest days to fly across a whole month) is genuinely useful, and the price tracking alert feature — which emails you when prices drop for a route you are watching — has saved me significant money. Set alerts for your intended routes a few months before you plan to travel and let the algorithm do the work.

Skyscanner’s “Everywhere” search, which shows you the cheapest destinations from your home airport for any given month, is the best tool I know for flexible travellers. Type in your departure airport, set the destination to “Everywhere” and the date to “Cheapest Month,” and you will see a map of the world colour-coded by price. I have booked entire trips this way, letting the cheap flight dictate the destination rather than the other way around.

    Understand How Airlines Price Seats

Airlines sell seats in fare buckets — groups of seats at a particular price point, with a limited number available in each bucket. When the cheapest bucket sells out, the price jumps to the next level. This is why prices for the same flight can vary dramatically from day to day, and why checking the same route multiple times over several days often reveals significant fluctuations.

Positioning flights — flying to a major hub rather than your nearest airport, then catching a connecting flight to your final destination — can save significant money but require careful research. Flying London Heathrow to Bangkok is almost always more expensive than flying London Gatwick to Bangkok via a Middle Eastern hub; and flying into Bangkok and bussing to Chiang Mai is often cheaper than flying direct to Chiang Mai.

    Be Strategic About Luggage

Budget airlines make a significant proportion of their revenue from ancillary fees, and luggage is the biggest single one. The price of adding a checked bag to a budget flight — particularly if you add it at the airport rather than online — can exceed the cost of the base fare. Always add luggage at the time of booking if you need it; the price almost always goes up after booking and always goes up at the airport.

Travelling with carry-on only eliminates this cost entirely and has the additional advantages of faster boarding, no baggage reclaim wait and no risk of lost luggage. I have travelled for up to three weeks on carry-on only with careful packing; it changes the experience of flying considerably for the better.

Use Miles and Points — But Selectively

Frequent flyer programmes and credit card points schemes can deliver genuinely exceptional value on premium cabin flights — the kind of value where you are redeeming points for a business class seat that would cost three thousand pounds in cash for the equivalent of a few hundred pounds worth of points accumulated on everyday spending. The learning curve is steep and the rules change frequently, but the upside is real.

For economy flights, the points value is considerably less compelling. Cash prices for economy, particularly on budget carriers and in advance, are often lower than what you would effectively pay in points. Save your points for premium redemptions where the gap between cash price and points cost is largest.

    Quick Reference: My Booking Checklist

    • Check Google Flights first — use the price calendar and set alerts
    • Try Skyscanner for alternative routing options
    • Compare flying from alternative nearby airports
    • Fly midweek where possible
    • Book 1-3 months ahead for domestic, 2-5 months for long-haul
    • Add luggage at booking time, never at the airport
    • Consider carry-on only for trips under two weeks
