Greece has more than two hundred inhabited islands and most of the visitors to the country end up on the same five. I understand why. Santorini looks extraordinary in photographs, Mykonos has a global reputation for nightlife, and Corfu has been written about in English for two centuries. But the islands most people never visit are where Greece actually lives, unhurried and largely unchanged by the volume of tourism that has transformed the famous ones.
Every island in this list is reachable by ferry from Athens in under eight hours. None of them appear in the standard package holiday brochures. All of them are extraordinary in their own way.
Ikaria: The Island That Ignores the Modern World
Ikaria is one of the world’s five Blue Zones, the places where people routinely live past ninety in good health. The local theory is that it has something to do with the red wine, the mountain air, the napping culture, and the communal panegyri festivals that run through the night several times a week in summer. The island operates on its own time, quite literally: buses arrive when they arrive, restaurants open when the food is ready, and nobody seems bothered by any of it.
The landscape is steep and forested and the beaches on the north coast are accessed by paths through pine trees. The hot springs near Therma have been in use since antiquity and you can sit in them for free. The local wine is sold in plastic bottles and is genuinely excellent. Ikaria rewards complete surrender to its rhythm.
Symi: Architecture Untouched by Mass Tourism
Symi sits off the Turkish coast near Rhodes and its harbour is lined with neoclassical mansions in ochre and terracotta that were built on sponge-diving money in the nineteenth century. When the sponge trade collapsed, so did the population, and the island was too poor and too small to attract the hotel development that changed its neighbours. As a result it looks today largely as it did a hundred years ago.
Day trippers arrive from Rhodes every morning and leave every afternoon. Stay the night and the island returns to its actual self: local fishermen cleaning nets on the quay, the smell of grilling fish from the tavernas above the harbour, and a silence that starts at about nine in the evening and lasts until the first ferry arrives in the morning.
Folegandros: The Anti-Santorini
Folegandros sits about forty kilometres from Santorini and is often described as what Santorini was before the cruise ships. The island is small and cliffed on all sides and the main village sits on a ridge above the sea with views across the Aegean that rival anything on its famous neighbour. There are no Instagram-famous infinity pools here. There is a main square with tavernas where everyone eats together in the evenings.
The Church of the Panagia sits on the highest point of the island above the village. The walk up is steep and the view from the top covers the entire island and dozens of kilometres of open sea. Get there for sunset and stay until the light is completely gone.
Naxos: The Largest Cycladic Island and the Most Self-Sufficient
Naxos produces its own food, its own wine, its own cheese, and its own marble, which means it has been less dependent on tourism than the other Cycladic islands and less shaped by it. The mountain villages in the interior are Greek rather than tourist-Greek: elderly men in kafeneions playing backgammon, churches with Byzantine frescoes, and a road system that suggests navigation by instinct is the intended method.
The beaches on the west coast are among the best in the Cyclades and the longest ones are still not overcrowded. The local graviera cheese is worth buying to take home. A week on Naxos is not a week in which you will run out of things to do or places to eat that are actually good.
